1 oz Buffalo or .9999 Maple Leaf?

(Oops, can't edit the title but I meant .99999)

I'm converting some of my kids savings into PM and was going to get one 1 oz gold coin. Trying to decide between the 07 Buffalo or the 07 .99999 Maple. Seems last I heard, mintage was pretty low on the Buffalo. So I was thinking it might have a numismatic premium someday. Any opinions?

If you're looking for a premium down the road....pay a small premium now and get a .99999 Maple. May be the only year they mint it.

I don't know which, if either, has more profit potential but I think the Maple to be by far the prettiest.

Oh I'm sorry. I did mean the 5 9 version. Better edit my post.

Re: 1 oz Buffalo or .9999 Maple Leaf?

My advice is based on buying by gold value. 1 ounce of fine gold alloyed to 4 karats is the same as .99999 pure so refined a fingerprint is deleterious to the purity.

Although, if you are heart-set on one of those 24k coins, go with the maple. THe buffalo is overpriced and has been in production for some years.

A 24 k coin with a lower premium is the Austrian Philharmonic. Pretty, shiny, and bigger than most bullion coins (albeit thinner).

Either way you cannot go wrong buying gold. The differences in premium will pale in comparison to the rise in metal value in the next few years. You are doing the right and wise thing by your children.

Just curious, is there a reason you're limiting your choices to the Buffalo and .99999 Maple? You could get more gold for the same amount of FRNs if you went with other forms. :bear_thumb:

No, just a personal choice. Just wanted to stick with US/Canadian coins.

As a side note, this is probably the second of 3 purchases so I'll probably get whichever coin I didn't pick the third time around. The first purchase was just a boring old American Gold Eagle.

I Personally like the 99999 Maple. Besides it has 200 dollars face value as compare to 50 dollars for the Buffalo.

Here are both, from my collection

The Maple is in a plastic bubble which cuts down on the clarity some

I like the buffalo better by far, it is American and there are no reporting requirements or restriction when selling...unlike Maples, and when you flip it over you don't see the Queen.

Quite right, when you flip it you see an ugly buffalo. Now what is your point again?

A matter of taste TomD, I consider the American Bison a thing of beauty...can't say that about the Queen, at least I can't.

What I was trying to say was, flip either and there is an ugly buffalo, so I don't see an advantage to either coin on that count.

yes indeed shave that buffalo's arse and teach him to walk backwards and he would make a fine member of the house of windsor

I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I would rank the Canadian Maple not only behind the Buffalo, but behind just about every other gold coin out there. It has too much of the "Socket Wrench" look for me.

I think it's a personal decision, but I like and own them both. I would go with the .99999 maple because it will be the only year with this design and mintage is limited to 30k. The buffalo mintage is low as well but 100k have already been minted and the design is the same as last year. I hate having the queen on there as well, same thing with the lunars. My advice is you should own them both but buy the maple now. You might have to pay more of a premium if you want it next year. I don't think the buffalo will go up in premium, but I'm no expert.

Hmm, 100k on the Buffalo? I thought the mintage was way down this year.

Yes they are way down. I doubt they will mint more than 150k. Last year they minted 323k. Use the link and scroll to the bottom.

I just want to chime in my opinion, from a newbs perspective. My first bullion purchase was a 2007 Maple, and then I purchased the buffalo. I like the Maple so much more that I picked up another one, and might get a few more in the future. It just looks so much cleaner to me. Enough buffs for me, give me some Maples!

I do not own any Buffaloes. For me taking a ciruclation coin and re-minting it is lazy and lacks imagination. Therefore I am not too keen on SAEs either, although I have a few. In my opinion it is the baby boomers who the major buyers of the buffaloes (they remember spending the nickels).

I do have the 5 9's maples because I do think it will have some semi-numismatic value in the future. I do not think the buffaloes will have much numismatic value.

I could be wrong, though, but I am placing my FRNs with the maples. I have to say the Queen's image is no better. I am sure she was beautiful once; slap that pic on there, maybe even put her in a skimpy outfit.

God save the Queen!

Krugs look good to me. The only modern 1oz bullion coin from a major country I have not purchased yet is a Gold American Eagle. I just can't pay 20-$25 over spot when I can get the same amount of gold for 10-$12 less.

Yeah that's right but she's more attractive than a stinkin' buffalo - and richer too - House of Windsor, you know.

Princess Di would be better; but then again she shot off her mouth so much that TPTB had to do her ...

That's the good thing about human nature - everyone has a viewpoint and an opinion on just about everything.

Frankly the most striking gold coin of all time (six thousand years - 2,700 years striking coins) to me was the original:

DEEP struck Saint Gaudens - 1907 $20 piece.

http://www.blanchardonline.com/coins...productid=1947

about 40 grand in MS64.

Usually Maple premiums aren't too high, I've seen them in the sub $10 range, though the premiums seem to stay south ( pun intended) of GAEs. Premiums on all gold coins seem to be climbing over the last few weeks. Krugs are now selling on Apmex for a $12 premium, or $708.35. Whew! That is a tripling of the premium from a few weeks ago.

Maples are so pretty, you need to have one.
